Kids + Community aims to increase inclusion in community by providing:

  • Education - to community services, including a checklist for the business or sporting club to self-assess their level of inclusivity.

  • Information - for families looking for activities for their child.

  • Collaboration - expert individualised OT services to upskill the staff, the child and/or key supports.

  • Adaption - simple, safe adaptions to the activity, including information about Assistive Technology.

  • Promotion - getting the word out about the benefits of disability inclusion for all kids, including their peers.

Kids + Community exists to enhance inclusion in extracurricular activities for kids with disabilities.

Why Sport??

  • Being involved in sport and staying active can have many benefits including:

    • Improved fine and gross motor skills, muscle development and overall physical performance

    • Improved quality of life

    • An opportunity to develop their social skills, identity and make friends

    • Increase self-esteem

  • A few barriers to participating in sport include:

    • Cost

    • Lack of appropriate programs

    • Stigma and perceived attitudes of peers and coaches

    • Environmental

    • Children’s need for support

    • Lack of knowledge of what is available and appropriate for their child
