Navigating Equipment Prescription for Kids
At Kids + Co.Lab we love supporting our clients and their families to find the right Assistive Technology to help them achieve their goals. Whether that’s a once in a lifetime goal like making a Paralympic Wheelchair Basketball Team, or a more day to day goal of easier and safer showers, we understand the power of getting the right match between the equipment, your environment and who and how you will use the equipment.
After identifying your goals, the next step is connecting with an Occupational Therapist with the experience in prescribing Assistive Technology under the National Disability Insurance Scheme. At Kids + Co.Lab, we regularly up skill in the latest equipment on the market, stay abreast of changes in the NDIS (which are annoyingly frequent!) and engage in internal and external professional development. Along with this constant learning, we are also learning from our clients about what has and hasn’t worked for them and using this bank of knowledge with each new situation.
We also see the value in connecting and collaborating with other members of your child’s team to make sure that the solution is aligned with their goals across environments. We will often ‘co-script’ equipment with your child’s Physiotherapist and Speech Pathologist. We also might work with your child’s school or daycare to ensure that the equipment we prescribe will be the right solution across all environments.
We will walk you through the process of finding suppliers and completing trials, liaising with you and the NDIS or Plan Manager around your current NDIS funding and complete the required Assistive Technology reports to get funding added to your plan.
We love the quote from the 1991 IBM training manual “For people without disabilities, technology makes things easier. For people with disabilities, technology makes things possible.” and we look forward to working with you to make your goals a reality.
